Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. As a child DuVernay's Aunt Denise was a great influence on her enthusiasm for artistic expression and creative thinking. The aunt she had was a nurse who was a night shift worker so she could spend her time to writing, reading or theater as well as other activities. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the arts can serve as an instrument for activism. Her mother, too, was well-educated and encouraged that she could express her thoughts by using the arts. DuVernay, who grew up alongside her extended family at Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the house of her father's family. DuVernay's dad recalled the marches for civil rights over the Edmund Pettus Bridge and the close town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay used the time that she spent in the state to stimulate her upcoming film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate of Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. She then attended in the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English and African American studies. DuVernay was drawn to the field of broadcast journalism while a student. DuVernay began as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the family home, and then looking through the waste of one of jurors. The work she was assigned to did not leave her satisfied in journalism, so she decided to go into the public relations industry. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist at a small production studio right after college. Her first venture was The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Alongside PR, her agency also launched several marketing and lifestyle platforms, such as The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
